What Are Trend Following Indicators

Trend following indicators is a way that many people invest in stocks. It’s a strategy that is used which will use long-term moves on how markets have done in the past to figure out what to trade and what to keep. Basically a way of watching the way the market moves and investing based on those past movements of certain stocks. Use of not only the current market price, but averages for moving, and breakouts will be used to figure out what to do.

People who use this method are not forecasting what will happen but they are following a trend and using it. This method will use three main components. Current price of stock, equity level and current market volatility. How much you buy or sell will be determined prior to buying of the stock and be based on volatility. This type of method will be used only after the stock has established a trend. In other words not on a new stock that hasn’t yet established any type of trend to it. Price will be one of the main considerations in this method. A person who trades through this method may use indicators to figure out which way the stock will go next.

It will need to be decided how much will be traded during the trend and how long it lasts. When the market is at a higher volatility level size of trading will be reduced in order to cut losses. With trend following indicators, time and price will always be of highest importance.

With trend following indicators you should be able to answer the following questions. When you enter the market, how many shares you will trade at a time. Money that will be risked for each trade, how will you cut your losses on a trade, and what to do when the trade becomes profitable?

Market Trend Signal™ is a trend following trading system. It subscribes to the exact trend following philosophy that he is discussing in this video.

Why does trend following work?

1. It is a statistically valid concept to have a “bias” in the otherwise random drift or a series of numbers.
2. It is as simple as Newton’s Law of Physics, a body in motion tends to stay in motion, a body at rest tends to stay at rest. A trend is nothing more than a momentum in a series of price movements.
3. The markets only allow a few people to make money, and the majority of traders, regardless of what they might think, or say, do not know how to do it correctly (trend following).
4. The markets exhibit maximum perversity. This means that the trends will only come about after most of the people have lost most of their money and have already given up in disgust. Then, when they do come, and nobody believes it anymore, eventually these people have to start chasing the market, and that’s what make the trend continue. Watch this Russell Sands movie as he discusses trend following.

Traditional Stock Chart Patterns and Trend Following Stocks

The internet is flooded with free stock charts. Many of the charts and the training that goes with them talk about traditional stock chart patterns. These patterns reference terms like Flag, Pennant, head and shoulders, triangles, wedges and so forth. Often you are told what these stock chart patterns look like, but very little systems to trade them. While most stock chart pattern systems are easy to learn you are still forced to find the patterns and determine if there is a good trade set up for you or not.

Almost every “stock chart pattern” that is referenced, is a correcting pattern, nothing more. They are called my different names, but all they are are pauses in a trending move, and are preparing to reverse or continue the trend. This means that these stocks are retracing a trend or reversing. Others refer to this as basing, consolidating, counter trending, retracing, and correcting. the consolidation period of a stock is a critical time for proper trade set ups, but you must wait for confirmation of the continuation of the trend before making a trade.

This chart of Pilgrims Pride shows a great example of triangle patterns. The Market Trend Signal™ trend following trading system is designed to give BUY signals at the confirmation point, or earlier, on all traditional chart formations.

When I was younger the biggest question I had was working out where can I learn about the stock market? I brought up by two amazing parents who gave me all of the love and support that any child could ask for but unfortunately they knew nothing about investing. This is a common problem for lots of children that are interested in subjects that their parents of family have very little knowledge in. So what is a person supposed to do they want some stock market advice or a few stock market books? Basically I want to know ‘Where can I learn about the Stock Market?’.

Well I am here to tell you that we are living one of the most amazing times in history. Every single person in the western world has access to the internet. If you can’t afford it at home then most cities have public libraries that will offer free access. What does this have to do with learning about the stock market and stock market information? Everything!

No one should ever need to ask where can I learn about the stock market any more because there is enough quality free stock market information available on the internet for everybody to get stock market help. If you want stock market programs or stock market reports they are available for free on line. If you are interested in a particular stock market book or a stock recommendation chances are they will be available online.

Ok, the free stuff will give you some basics to get you a very basic knowledge of ‘where can I learn about the Stock Market’, but it is in the details that you will make money.

The problem with all the free stock market data is it does it really tell you what to do and when to do it? No . Yes we can gather tons of stock market data but is that stock market data going to help me to profit.

So rather than asking where can I learn about the stock market, perhaps you should be asking what can I learn about the stock market? and how can I profit from the stock market. Let’s have a quick look at the different levels of stock market educations available.

1. The most basic ‘where can I learn about the stock market’ questions are for complete beginners eg. What is the share market? What are stock shares? How do I buy stock?

2. The second level of ‘where can I learn about the stock market’ education is to start looking at some stock market strategies. For instance should you simply buy and hold or are there better ways to make bigger and safer profits? You can also start looking at some analysis and stock market graphs or stock market software. At this stage you should definitely start keeping an eye on a group or stocks and the stock market prices.

3. The last level of ‘where can I learn about the stock market’ education is to start thinking about buying actual stocks and implementing strategies. For instance there are many companies that will give you a complete stock market report or a particular stock report. There are plenty of websites that send out a free daily stock market update. These reports are incredibly beneficial to the novice investor as it allows them to start understanding the language and beliefs of a professional investor.

Trends University and the Market Trend Signal™ trading system give you the answers to your question ‘where can I learn about the stock market’, look no further it is all in one place. There is no time wasted sifting through all the free stock market crap found online, it is just to vague. Trends University teaches specific methods, there is no guessing what to do next it is outlined step by step.

The Philosophy

Trend following is a methodology of trading. There are many different strategies to use within the methodology. Most strategies are very simple to employ yet very difficult for some people to stick with. The concept is simple, stay in a trend as long as it is there.

Trend Following is a systematic approach to trading stocks. A Systematic approach vs discretionary. System trading is technical by nature, meaning that trade decisions are based on a system of price or indicators based on price. There are almost as many systems as there are traders. Some work and others don’t, some are easy to use some are very difficult. Systematic trading takes discipline, trust and patience. System traders understand two things very well. We will have draw downs (periods of losses), but we also know that trusting a system will offer gains in the future.

You see, what happens to most traders is you want to find the crystal ball, the holy grail of trading and making money. Once you have “found it,” it invariably changes and you must move on looking for the next crystal ball. The cycle ends when your out of money.

Discretionary approaches imply that “you” are the edge. You somehow have a sixth sense about trades and have a lighting fast method to squash the market. You know exactly what your looking for and you decide when the stock is about to catapult to monstrous gains. You have cat like reflexes as your eyes bulge bloodshot at 3 monitors, and your caffeinated, twitching, trigger finger gets super punchy at any tick on your level 2 day trading account! You are the man (or woman) you are the guru. How’s that been working for you? How many times have your guru senses changed during a losing streak? How many times have you swung for the fences because “This is the one”! Well there is a better, less stressful way to do this.

The Market Trend Signal trading system provides a system for finding and trading stocking using a trend following method. Click on any of the 30 day free trial links to learn more about the trend following stocks system

Trend following – Michael Covel

Trend Trading or Trend following is a popular trading system. The method involves joining an established trend with an aim to ride the stock in the direction it’s heading and exiting when the trend reverses. A trend trader is either right or wrong and will never hold a position in hope the knife stops falling. The trend trading system requires strict self discipline to follow the precise signals the system is created on.

There are many methods for establishing if a stock is in a trend. The quickest method I have found is using the Market Trend Signal™ trend trading system. The system is fast to finds excellent trend trade setups. It is very easy to see the current rating and trend of a stock. I can also quickly back test the stock to determine the trade accuracy and risk to reward potential on any stock or ETF.

Trend Trading is a trading strategy that relies heavily on defining risk. The major contributor for success is not just sourcing a trend but managing entry and exit. Trend traders have clear trading rules to cut their losses before they turn into large losses, while allowing their profitable trades to run. The Trend Trading strategy cuts positions quickly, forcing the bulk of the profits to be made from a handful of successful trades. The success of trend trading isn’t the win-loss ratio, but the profits obtained from the winning positions. It is important that the trend trading system then defines a tight stop loss, with enough space to allow the stock to continue with its trend and not stopping the trend trader out before the trend resumes.

One easy and effective risk management method is the 2% rule. The aim of this risk management technique is to define an amount that the trend trader is willing to loose on each individual trend trade. The 2% rule calculates this value at 2% of the value of the portfolio. The value of portfolio is calculated by adding the value held in cash, with the current value of all open trades. This value is then multiplied by 2% to calculate the amount the trader should risk. Based on this value, entry price and stop loss price the trend trader can then calculate how many shares to buy to risk only 2% of their account.
